Random Spring Ramblings from the leaders at the XRE!
Adventure day for Beavers and Cubs at Gilwell Park
Gilwell Park in the Epping Forest is the Worldwide Home of Scouting and was opened by Baden Powell our founder in 1919. Each year Beavers and Cubs are invited to Adventure Days held on site along with 3000 others from the London Area, and happily this year I have convinced the leaders that both our Beavers and Cubs should go together and join in this year on Sunday 11th June.
The Theme this year is Space with over 100 activities arranged from Rock Climbing and Archery to Fun Fairs and Craft workshops, this should be fantastic day.
All parents should by now have received their Activity Notification letter, which I hope by now has been returned, signed and paid? More info to follow via your section leaders.
Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers
Once again we are taking part in the Sainsbury’s Active kids campaign. Please do pass your vouchers to the leaders who will put them into the official box in the Hut. In past years we have saved enough points to acquire cooking stoves, games equipment and tents all for free.
Explorers in Snowdonia
Once again our Explorers Scouts will be setting off to Lyndy Isaf our wild campsite in Snowdonia over the Easter Weekend.
Since 1990 every Easter the Explorers have used campsite at the foot of Mount Snowdon to experience real wilderness camping and to take part in Rock Climbing, Scrambling, Trekking and Canoeing all on or near the site. Over the year’s hundreds of young people from Shooters Hill have been given this amazing opportunity, to experience the great outdoors, thanks to our wonderful team of leaders who run the Unit. We wish them a safe trip once again this Easter and look forward to their stories upon their return.
Bank Standing Orders
As you may know we now have moved from Lloyds Bank to the CAF Bank and increased our monthly membership fee to £14 per member. Unfortunately, the repeated reminders have not filtered through to all parents in the Group. Can you please get a wiggle on and notify your bank immediately, using the Standing Order form that we have sent to you by email and hard copy. Sorry to moan but we really need this source of income to pay for the rising outgoings for badges, scarves, hall rental, equipment and minibus costs etc, etc.
Spring Clean at the Hut.
Yes, it’s payback time for all our Parents at the XRE! We need your help us at our Scout Hut Spring Clean. We have a number of jobs where needing your assistance including chopping wood for our stove, clearing leaves and overhanging branches, fixing our ceiling with new plasterboard and giving the place a good scrub. Please pack your garden rake and feather duster and head over to the Hut for 10.30 am on Saturday March the 25th You will be met by very grateful leaders who will provide you with tea and encouragement a plenty. I do not wish leave this tidy up to our leaders who are volunteers and already do so much for your children at the XRE.
Our Troop has hit the ground running this year, with two soap box cars well on the way to completion for the District Soap Box race on March the 25th in Shrewsbury Park. The troop have put an amazing amount of effort into designing and building the vehicles which will make all involved proud owners not just their craft badges but also two ready to race supercharged soap box cars. This side of summer the scouts are working towards the Expedition Challenge where they are learning lightweight camping skills, cooking and hiking independently of adults! Their first training camp for the expedition will be on the 4 and 5th March where the scouts will get to grips with how to set up a camp site and cook for themselves all weekend. When the nights start get longer and the days brighter they will be venturing out on treasure hunts using their new map skills to uncover treasure both in our woods and whilst at camp. We are currently looking for parents who can help us out on Sunday 4th June and over the weekend of the 16-18 June to assist the troop to gain their expedition challenge award.
16 Beavers are off to Camp on the 5th and 6th of May to Hope Hill Scout Camp near Meopham Kent. They will be staying in indoor accommodation but cooking and learning their first scouting skills outside. For most of the Colony this will be their first stay away from home and we wish them the very best on their first experience of outdoor scouting
Once again I find it necessary to remind a very few parents that it is not acceptable to send your child to any of our meetings without correct uniform, including Scout Activity Trousers. I would like to reminder you all that if anyone has any financial reasons as to why they cannot purchase these items please do let us know in confidence via my below contacts. We as a Group will are very happy to assist any member via our reserved funds. Uniforms are worn by scouts all over the world and we are no exception here on Shooters Hill.
